The image many outsiders have of Alberta is of cowboy country. Certainly events such as the Calgary Stampede capitalize on this image, and for a while in July many urban Calgarians sport stetsons. There are real cowboys, especially in the ranch country in the Rocky Mountain foothills, though most Albertans aren't cowboys. Rodeos, like the one pictured here in Ponoka, are popular entertainment, as are cowboy-style country music bars.
