Contrary to popular misconception, Afghani men loved
getting their pictures taken. I often wandered the
bazaars of Herat in the early morning and late afternoon
when the blazing midday July sun didn't drive me inside.
Despite some language problems, I found many Afghans
happy to pose -- the toughest part was getting them to
look natural and not wooden when faced with the camera.
Taking pictures of women, on the other hand, was strictly
taboo. Many wore covering over their entire bodies except
for little peek holes for the eyes. © 1977, 1999 Richard McGuire |
